Maruichi Taikai is going to be the eighth certified tournament held in Poland, whose results will be included into European Mahjong Association’s riichi ranking list. The tournament continues the tradition of all-Polish tournaments initiated by Warsaw University Japanese Studies students in '80 and reactivated in 2009. This year we wish to commemorate the 91st anniversary of mahjong's first appearance in Poland (22nd November 1924). With reference to that, we have entitled this year’s tournament Maruichi. Kanji ideograms used for the name of the tournament resemble the 91 number in shape. Besides, maruichi means “full”, “entire”, “whole” – which symbolizes the full-year waiting period since the last anniversary tournament or the whole 91 years of mahjong in Poland. By organising such events regularly, we hope to make mahjong popular in our country again.
